Law of Total Probability

A fundamental rule for computing the total probability of an event by combining contributions from distinct cases.

The law of total probability allows us to compute the probability of a complex event by breaking it into smaller, manageable conditional parts. This approach is especially powerful in problems composed of multiple scenarios. Together with Bayes’ theorem, it forms one of the foundations of reasoning under uncertainty. It is widely used in decision trees, classification, diagnostic systems, and multi-scenario risk analysis. In essence, it is the mathematical version of solving a large problem by decomposing it intelligently.
