Alternative Hypothesis
The hypothesis that argues there is a meaningful effect, difference, or relationship in the data, in contrast to the null hypothesis.
The alternative hypothesis represents the meaningful difference, effect, or relationship that the researcher or analyst wants to investigate in the data. It stands in contrast to the null hypothesis, and the main purpose of statistical testing is to determine whether the data supports it. Claims such as “the new model performs better than the old one,” “two groups are not the same,” or “a given variable affects the outcome” fall under the alternative hypothesis. For that reason, it is not only a technical element, but the mathematical form of the research question itself.
