Semantic Layer

A layer that abstracts business metrics, definitions, and query logic consistently above technical data structures.

The semantic layer bridges the gap between technical warehouse tables and the concepts business users actually work with. It ensures that metrics such as revenue, active customer, churn, or average basket size are governed through a single definition. Without this layer, different teams may calculate the same metric differently. The semantic layer is therefore an important component of enterprise data trust, because it guarantees consistency not only of numbers, but also of meaning.
