Audit Trail

A tracking mechanism that records who changed data or processes, when, and how.

An audit trail is one of the fundamental mechanisms for transparency and accountability in data systems. Questions such as who made which change, when a job ran, and which version produced a dataset are answered through the audit trail. This visibility is essential in regulated industries, security investigations, and high-risk AI infrastructures. An audit trail does not merely record the past; it also builds trust.
