Category Standardization

The process of unifying different spellings, abbreviations, or formats representing the same concept into one standard form.

Category standardization is used to resolve inconsistencies commonly found in operational data sources. Examples include different spellings for the same city, mixed department abbreviations, or inconsistent product category labels. Fragmented categories like these directly distort aggregation and segmentation results. Standardization is usually carried out through mapping tables, business rules, and controlled vocabularies. For that reason, category cleanup is not just cosmetic; it is essential for analytical correctness.
