Validity

A quality dimension indicating whether a data value conforms to defined formats, ranges, vocabularies, or business rules.

Validity asks not only whether a value is present, but whether it conforms to predefined rules. Entering text into a date field, recording a negative age, or using a category value outside the approved code list are all validity problems. Such violations can break later processing steps and distort modeling workflows. The earlier validity checks are applied at data entry points, the lower the quality cost becomes. Validity is a cornerstone of preventive data quality control.
