Skewness
A measure showing whether a distribution is symmetric and in which direction its tail extends.
Skewness helps us understand how much a data distribution deviates from symmetry. If the distribution stretches toward the right tail, skewness is positive; if it stretches toward the left, it is negative. This matters not only for data description but also for evaluating whether modeling assumptions are reasonable. It is especially useful when checking normality assumptions, deciding whether transformations are needed, and assessing the impact of outliers. Skewness tells the story of the tails rather than just the center of the data.
