**TLDR:** A source-reliability perspective that describes the origin, creation conditions, and processing history of a data element.

<p>Data provenance is closely related to lineage, but places more emphasis on origin reliability and production context. It asks which system a record came from, under what conditions, under which version, and through which process flow. Provenance is especially important in scientific data, regulated environments, and critical AI decision systems. In some contexts, where the data came from matters as much as the data itself.</p>
