Today, the technology world is quietly crossing a critical threshold. With GPT-5.4, the way AI models operate is starting to change in a visibly meaningful way.

As someone who has closely followed the evolution of large language models over the past few years, I can confidently say this update does not simply mean “a slightly stronger model.” What we are witnessing is actually the beginning of a new phase in how AI approaches problem solving.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the new model is that, instead of generating an immediate answer for complex tasks, it first builds a plan. In other words, rather than reacting reflexively to a prompt, the model breaks the problem down, separates it into steps, and creates a structured reasoning path toward a solution. More importantly, the user can intervene in this process and guide it.

This approach opens the door to far more controlled and reliable outputs, especially in areas such as data analysis, software development, research, and strategic problem solving. Put differently, LLMs are no longer just systems that generate outputs; they are becoming systems with an architecture of thought.

Why is computer use so important?

In my view, one of the most important developments is the deeper integration of “computer use” capabilities into model behavior. The ability of an AI system to take screenshots, navigate between applications, and complete tasks using a mouse and keyboard is a signal of a much larger transformation.

At this point, AI is no longer limited to generating information. It is becoming a system that can take real action. That brings us to a fundamental question: Is AI still just a tool, or is it gradually turning into a digital coworker?

What do the benchmark results suggest?

Benchmark results also offer striking evidence that supports this shift. According to the OSWorld benchmark, which measures desktop task performance, GPT-5.2 achieved around 47% task completion success, while average human performance was measured at approximately 72%. In the new model, that figure rises to nearly 75%.

This suggests that, in some digital tasks, AI is beginning to match—and in some cases even surpass—the performance of the average user.

The real question is no longer what AI knows. The real question is: what can AI do together with us?

Why does this matter for enterprise use?

Another major improvement on the model side is wider context capacity and lower error rates. Models that can understand longer documents, produce more stable reasoning, and reduce hallucination rates are especially important for enterprise use cases.

We will likely see the impact of these advances much more clearly in areas such as RAG systems, knowledge management, research workflows, and long-document analysis.

What comes next?

When we look at all of these developments from a broader perspective, it becomes clear that we are standing at the beginning of a much larger transformation. AI is no longer just a tool. It is gradually becoming an operational layer embedded into the way work gets done.

Over the next few years, I believe concepts such as “AI agents,” “autonomous workflows,” and “human-AI collaboration” will become much more central to both strategy and execution.

My personal view is this: the next major leap will not come primarily from raw model capacity, but from agent architectures and AI systems that can complete tasks end to end. This shift will fundamentally reshape how work is done in fields such as data science, software development, operations management, and knowledge work.
